One of the lesser-known Beat novelists and poets has his birthday today: Kenneth Patchen, b. Dec. 13, 1911 (d. 1972)

Patchen was never formally afiliated with any literary movement -but was first a fellow traveller of the Surrealists and Dada, and later often considered to share the Beat sensibilities.

What is unusual for Patchen is partly his extensive collaborations with musicians, artists and other writers, partly his own ability to mix media and art forms…

Below, one of his picture poems: What the Story Tells Itself

“Space Oddity” has come to define Bowie, perhaps because it’s as protean as its creator has tried to be. It’s a breakup song, an existential lullaby, consumer tie-in, product test, an alternate space program history, calculated career move, and a symbolic end to the counterculture dream—the “psychedelic astronaut” drifting off impotently into space (Camille Paglia suggested the last); it’s a kid’s song, drug song, death song, and it marks the birth of the first successful Bowie mythic character, one whose motives and fate are still unknown to us. (via Space Oddity « Pushing Ahead of the Dame) —If you have any interest at all in David Bowie, you need to be reading this fascinating, beautifully comprehensive blog.

Madonna: Walls, subways, sidewalks…

Rolling Stone: What was your tag?

Madonna: Boy Toy.

Rolling Stone: No shit! Who came up with Boy Toy?

Madonna: It could have been Futura. He’s clever. He painted the whole inside of my bedroom on 99th, which my landlord was not happy about. We had a little gang — Debi Mazar was part of it. We called ourselves the Webo Girls — like huevos, girls with balls.

Rolling Stone: Do you own paintings by Warhol, Haring, or Basquiat?

Madonna: I have a few of each. Keith and Andy did four pieces for me as a wedding present when I married Sean. They’re pictures of me from the cover of the New York Post when all the nude photographs of me came out in Playboy and Penthouse. The headline says I’M NOT ASHAMED. So they took all these Post covers and painted over them. They’re in my house in L.A. — a signpost, a watershed moment. I also have a leather jacket that Keith Haring painted on that I would never give up.
”

- From Austin Scaggs’ excellent interview with Madonna in the new Rolling Stone, which as a whole makes me wonder if Madonna had the best 20s of anyone who has ever lived.

Tonight we also celebrate the 50th birthday of the disco(thèque), a cultural event of earth-shattering proportions…

On Oct. 19, 1959 at The Scotch Club in Aachen, West Germany the regular dance band was unable to play and a hastily rigged amplifier and set of speakers was installed to provide the music needed. That night Klaus Quirini became the world’s first live disc jockey - so named after the club’s other appellation, The Jockey Dance Bar…

Two things you need to know about this dance shindig and night of thoughtful electronic music. Number one: It’s the last FrequeNC monthly party at Nightlight, and they’ve been doing it well there for three years now. Two: They’ve gathered a special cadre from the label’s roster for this blowout. Steve Summers is the acid house nom de plume of Jason Letkiewicz, whose Rhythm Based Lovers project on FrequeNC was a smash. He’s also half of the duo Manhunter on Ghostly International (home to Matthew Dear, et al.). Durham’s Zeke Graves (aka DATAHATA) made waves among European house heads with his deep house vibe as KINOEYE. Beautiful Swimmers is Ari Goldman (also in Manhunter) and Andrew Field-Pickering of Food for Animals, both primo DJs who know their way around a fader. Basically, here are some of the world’s best in their respective nooks and crannies of techno, disco and house music, no joshing, and the label putting out the music—and this dance party—calls your backyard home. $6/ 10 p.m. —Chris Toenes

i12bent:
